hot  adj.

fireman  n.

cause  v.n.

cause sb. to do sth.

Illness caused him to lose his temper.

examine  v.

如examine a patient,检查患者;check the clock,对一下钟。

accidentally  adv.

snatch  v.

At last firemen have put out a big forest fire in California.

Please put the light/fire out.

… they have been trying to find out how the fire began. ……

I'll try and find out the name of the person who saved my life yesterday.

2how the fire beganfind out的宾语,它是一个由疑问词how引导的名词性从句。

They were also quite sure that a cigarette end did not start the fire.

that引导的这个名词从句也可以写成that the fire was not started by a cigarette end。

… a fireman accidentally discovered the cause. ……

I don't know who discovered America.

He noticed the remains of a snake which was wound round the electric wires of a 16,000-volt power line.

The villagers were surprised to see the remains of an aeroplane near the lake.

上”、“缠绕”,常与around/round连用,如:

Did you wind this piece of wire round the tree?

in this way,就这样。

When it did so …,当它这样做时……。

Has Susan got into university? I believe/think so.

I stayed at this hotel five years ago.

Have you ever stayed at this hotel?

I have been staying at this hotel for three weeks.

He stayed there for two days and then he left.

How long have you been an art teacher?

I've been teaching art for a long time.

I lent my suitcase to Tom last week and he hasn't returned it yet.

throw

Forest fires are often caused by cigarette ends which people carelessly throw away.

He threw the ball to me and I caught it.

The boy threw a stone at the window and broke it.

quitequiet

They were also quite sure that a cigarette end did not start the fire.

That hat is quite pretty.

The class kept very quiet during the lesson.

The sea was very quiet this morning.

causereason

A fireman discovered the cause of the fire.

Do you know the cause of the war?

What caused the fire?

Forest fires are often caused by broken glass or cigarette ends.

Give me your reasons for going there.

What was the reason for the delay?

What was the cause of the delay?

That is the reason why he left.

I reasoned with him for hours, but I couldn't persuade him to change his mind.

dropfall

A bird had dropped the snake on to the wires.

As he walked past the tree, an apple dropped from it.

He dropped the bag on the floor.

He fell down the stairs and broke his leg.

Please hold the vase and don't let it fall.

When leaves fall in autumn, I'll come back.

1. 选(c)。
根据课文第2行… they have been trying to find out how the fire began可以判断,只有(c)wanted to find out what had caused the fire(想要找出什么引起了火灾)最能说明消防队员仔细查看地面的原因,其它三个选择都不够全面。

A bird snatched up the snake from the ground and then dropped it on to the wires … When it did so, it sent sparks down to the ground and these immediately started a fire. 可以推断,只有(d)a snake which had been dropped on to the wires by a bird(被鸟扔到电线上的蛇)与课文实际内容相符,是引起火灾的原因,其它三个选择都不符合课文的实际内容。

3. 选(a)。

6. 选(c)。
前一句中的was able to solve the mystery是“解开了这个谜”的意思,be able to用于一般过去时表示一个动作已经成功地完成。(a)could if he wanted to(如果他想要就能够)、(b)could but he didn't want to(能够但他不想)、(d)didn't succeed in solving it(没有成功解决它)都与前一句的含义不符,只有(c)succeeded in solving it(成功解决了它)同前一句的含义相近,因此应该选(c)。

上”的意思,与后面的the ground一起表示“在地面上”;而(a)at、(b)from、(c)over这三个介词放在the ground前都不能表示“在地面上”的意思。

(a)controlled it(控制了它)、(b)checked it(制止了它、(d)turned it off(关掉、关上它)均与put out the fire的意思有差异,只有(c)extinguished it(扑灭了它)与put out the fire意思相同,因此应该选(c)。

9. 选(d)。
只有(d)this morning(今天上午)是正确的表达方式,而(a)today morning、(b)today in the morning、(c)in the morning today这三个选择都不符合习惯用法,都不是正确的表达方式,所以(d)是正确答案。

10. 选(a)。
(b)chancily没有这个词;(c)fortunately(幸运地)、(d)luckily(侥幸地,幸运地)意思相差都比较大;只有(a)by chance(偶然)意思跟accidentally相近,所以(a)是正确答案。

(a)That's so(就是如此),意思不符;(b)Like this(像这样)不能表示方式;(d)So(因此)意思也不正确;只有(c)That's how(那就是如何……的方法)同In this way的含义相符,因为how 相当于the way in which,所以(c)是正确答案。

12. 选(c)。
在(a)taken(拿)、(b)pulled(拉、拖)、(c)seized(抓住)、(d)carried(携带)这四个选择中,只有(c)seized同前一句中的snatched(抓住)意义相同,所以(c)是正确答案。
